“SOMALIA: from the research of the past to the perspective of the future”

The theme of the development of Somali society over time will be the focus of a series of in-depth meetings and an exhibition organized in Trieste by the Italian-Somali cultural association Sagal with the aim of supporting the political and social will of the Somali country, carried out with the contribution of the Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia L.R. n.9/2023 – Integrated system of interventions on immigration and the co-organization of the Municipality of Trieste.

Through its activities, the Association aims to be a bridge between Somalia and the local institutions of Friuli Venezia Giulia and in this capacity it has organised the study and in-depth seminar “SOMALIA: from research into the past to the perspective of the future” which will take place in the Sala Maggiore of the Venezia Giulia Chamber of Commerce of Trieste on 17 April 2024 and the photographic exhibition “Mogadishu and its historical-urban evolution: pages of the city’s history” hosted in the Sala Carlo Sbisà of Warehouse 26 of the Old Port of Trieste from 18 April to 5 May 2024.

During the event – ​​which includes two panels on “Urbanisation in the cultural history of Mogadishu” and “Urban problems linked to the development economy in Somalia” which will see Federico Battera of the Department of Political and Social Sciences of the University of Trieste as moderator and a round table entitled “Mogadishu: advantages of the structure urban planning and economic opportunities are the key challenges today” moderated by TG1 journalist Paolo Di Giannantonio – the role that Italy, and in particular the Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia, will have to assume especially in the field of infrastructure reconstruction in the field of administrative, civil and hospital services, will be discussed.

Particular attention will be paid to the development of cooperation that according to the promoters of the initiative can lead to favorable trade exchanges between Italy and Somalia capable of implementing interport traffic.

In particular, the redevelopment of historic buildings that Italy built in a certain historical period and that were subsequently destroyed by the events of the civil war will be highlighted.

In this context, it will be interesting to know the current reality that the federal government, with great sacrifices and with a spirit of reconstruction of an innovative mentality, is implementing with difficulty, but with particular attention to social coexistence and respect for the armed forces and those of public order.

The debate will bring together experts, academics and representatives of the Somali national government, the Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia and local authorities.
